Gukesh D: Youngest Chess World Champion Making History at 18!

A new world chess champion!

Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest-ever World Chess Champion on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the age of 18. He faced China’s Ding Liren in a 12-game match held in Singapore. Gukesh secured victory by winning three games to Ding’s two, marking a historic and emotional moment for India and for Gukesh himself

Liren, 32, leaned over the table in despair after committing a critical endgame error. This misstep gave Gukesh the perfect chance to clinch victory.

Cheers erupted from the viewing rooms near the playing arena. Among the celebrating fans were Indian supporters who had traveled for the match and local Singaporeans of Indian origin.

Gukesh’s triumph shattered the long-standing record set by Russia’s Garry Kasparov, who became champion at 22. At just 18, Gukesh has rewritten history with this monumental achievement.

He now stands as the second Indian ever to win the World Chess Championship. The first was Viswanathan Anand, who held the title five times during his illustrious career.

In the decisive 14th game, Gukesh secured a final score of 7.5 against Ding’s 6.5. This result solidified his extraordinary rise as a force in the chess world.

Before this victory, Gukesh had already set records as the youngest challenger for the world title. Now, his name is etched among the legends of chess.

Congratulation messages poured on Twitter for Gukesh including President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu, Prime minister Shri Narendra Modi and leader of opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi and so many dignitaries.
